Family Vacation Specialist Stacey Bridgeford inspected the Queen Mary II for Candy Cain Travel. Here is her report:
I was fortunate enough to take a cruise with the Cunard line on the Queen Mary 2 from October 29 until November 5, 2009.. This being my first cruise, I didn’t know what to expect. Right away, I noticed how enormous and magnificent the ship was. The word “regal” does not do justice to the incredible décor and ambiance of this vessel. The old world English feel makes you question whether or not you are still in America. I knew that my husband, 18-month old son and I were in for an incredible experience.
Â
Our interior stateroom was quaint, cozy and clean. While it was a little bit of a squeeze for our king bed and the crib for our baby, we didn’t really have any complaints. Upon retuning to the room nightly, our beds were turned down and little chocolates were placed on our pillows. If it iss the little things of luxury that you appreciate, you will be satisfied on this cruise.
Â
The restaurants that we dined in will always be remembered, if not for the food than for the décor. (I promise you, it will be for the food!) In the banquet hall that we were seated in nightly with our group, we were required to dress a bit more than casual. I enjoyed this so much. Being a mother of a small child doesn’t give me much time to feel pretty. Dressing up every night was very enjoyable. Plus, my son looked adorable in a five piece suit! Every night we ordered from a menu of gourmet foods that satisfied our like no other food I have ever tasted. I was so surprised on how accommodating the restaurant staff was with my son. They had his highchair waiting for him every night and a kids menu for him to choose from. There was not one dish that I tried that I didn’t label as divine.
Â
When we were done enjoying our meals, we dropped our son off at the nanny service. The nannies were certified British nannies and were sweet, smart and trustworthy. I didn’t hesitate to leave my son with them at all, and he enjoyed being there so much. Best of all, the childcare in the Kid Zone didn’t cost us anything extra!
Â
Upon leaving our son, we were excited about our options of activities. I never thought that I would go to a masquerade ball, but I did. The elegant dresses that I saw twirling around at the ball sparkled like stars in the night sky and gave me the feeling that I was in a movie from the 1940’s. We loved taking walks around the ship and admiring the beautiful décor. Taking a trip on the glass elevator and walking down a stair case made of brass made us feel like royalty, so we shopped like royalty from Hermmes to Swarovski. The shops offer an elaborate selection of the finer things in life.
Â
This itinerary on the Queen Mary 2 (also known as the QM2) was going to Rhode Island, Boston, Bar Harbor, Nova Scotia and St. Johns, New Brunswick. Since this was in the Fall, the foliage and scenery was incredible. I whole heartedly enjoyed every port, and there was so much to do- from Halloween parades to aquariums to museums.
Â
The truth is that I could have gone the entire week and not stepped foot on land once and been totally satisfied. I enjoyed the service, the food and the décor immensely. I now know what it’s like to live like royalty, at least for a week.
